After installing thousands of countertops across the Costa del Sol, we’ve seen how porcelain vs quartz actually performs in real homes. This comparison is based on hundreds of installations, not just technical specs.

What Are Porcelain and Quartz Countertops?

Porcelain is a high-density ceramic material made from refined clays and minerals fired at temperatures above 1200°C. We mainly work with large-format porcelain from brands such as Arklam, Techlam, Sapienstone, Laminam, Dekton, and other Italian and Spanish brands , which allow for installations with very few joints and perform exceptionally well both indoors and outdoors.

Quartz is an engineered material made of approximately 90–93% natural quartz crystals mixed with resins. While it remains a solid option, we’ve noticed some recurring limitations with quartz in Costa del Sol homes.

Real Comparison: Porcelain vs Quartz on the Costa del Sol

Criterion Porcelain  Quartz Our Observation on the Costa del Sol
Heat Resistance Excellent Medium Porcelain handles daily cooking on islands much better
Sun / UV Resistance Very High Medium Some quartz colours fade over time in very bright kitchens
Scratch Resistance Very High High Both perform well with normal use
Outdoor Use Excellent Not recommended Porcelain allows consistent design between indoor and outdoor areas
Ease of Fabrication High (except Dekton) High Arklam cuts and works faster than Dekton
Value for Money Good in large formats Variable Levantina Quartz and Topzstone offer strong value in several colours

Why We Recommend Large-Format Porcelain in Most Projects

Over the past few years, we’ve seen a clear shift in the type of homes being built and renovated on the Costa del Sol.

Many modern villas now integrate the kitchen with terraces, outdoor kitchens, and pool areas. In these projects, large-format porcelain offers a significant advantage: it allows you to maintain visual continuity between indoor and outdoor spaces.

It also reduces the number of joints, which looks cleaner on islands and long countertops. Among the options we work with, Techlam, Laminam , Sapienstone and  Arklam countertops stand out for their efficiency during cutting and fabrication.

This often results in a more competitive price compared to other technical porcelain brands like Dekton, which can be more time-consuming to fabricate than most other porcelain brands.

Real Issues We See with Quartz on the Costa del Sol

Although quartz is a high-quality material, we regularly see a few recurring issues in homes along the coast:

  • Fading from sun exposure: In very bright kitchens or those with large south-facing windows, some quartz colours lose intensity over time.
  • Heat sensitivity on islands: When a hob is installed on an island and used frequently, marks or discolouration can appear if trivets aren’t used.
  • Visual fatigue with bold colours: A small number of clients who chose very strong or vibrant colours later found them tiring after 1–2 years.

In the quartz category, we also work with brands such as Levantina Quartz, Equs Quartz, and Compac alongside the leading Silestone, which offer excellent value in certain colours and finishes.

Do People Regret Their Choice?

In our experience, the vast majority of clients are happy with both porcelain and quartz after installation. Genuine regret is rare and almost never related to defects in the material itself.

The few clients who later contacted us wanting to change their countertop usually did so because they had chosen very bold or intense colours that became visually tiring over time.

We have seen this happen with both quartz and, to a lesser extent, with porcelain.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is porcelain more expensive than quartz?

It depends on the format and brand. Large-format porcelain is often similarly priced or slightly higher than good-quality quartz. However, its superior durability and lower long-term maintenance often make it better value.

Can you use porcelain outdoors?

Yes. One of porcelain’s biggest advantages is its excellent resistance to sun, rain, and temperature changes, making it ideal for terraces and outdoor kitchens. Quartz is generally not recommended for outdoor use.

Does quartz fade in the sun on the Costa del Sol?

In very bright kitchens or those with large south or south-west facing windows, we have seen some quartz colours fade over time. Porcelain maintains its appearance much better.

Which is better for a kitchen island with a hob?

In our experience, porcelain performs better when cooking frequently on an island. Quartz can develop marks or discolouration if hot pans are placed directly on the surface regularly.

Can I use the same material indoors and outdoors?

Yes. One of porcelain’s biggest advantages is its excellent resistance to sun, rain, and temperature changes, making it ideal for outdoor kitchens on the Costa del Sol. Large-format porcelain makes it much easier to create visual continuity between the kitchen and outdoor areas (terrace, outdoor kitchen, or poolside). This is something many of our clients value highly in modern Costa del Sol villas.

Our Current Recommendation about porcelain vs quartz Costa del Sol

In most projects we carry out on the Costa del Sol, we recommend large-format porcelain for three main reasons:

  • Better performance with heat and strong sunlight, both very common in this region.
  • The ability to maintain design continuity between indoor and outdoor living spaces.
  • Fewer joints and a cleaner finish on islands and large countertops.

Quartz remains an excellent choice when maximum edge impact resistance is a priority or when the client prefers specific colours and finishes that quartz offers.
